Chelsea Last Gasp Heartache

With the aftermath that happoned last night I beleive some people need to take a step back and reflect upon two largely magnificent performances by our team. Yes the referee was poor who shouldn’t be allowed near a professional football ground again, but he did harshly dismiss Barcelona’s Abidal too, just like Manchester United’s Darren Fletcher walked the day before.

The comment made by Skysports pundit Jamie Redknapp was a good one that in Norway referee’s would never get to ref a game between 2 teams battling for such a big prize, a place in the Uefa Champions League Final in Rome on 27th May.

Chelsea to be fair almost contained the most potent attacking force seen in recent years over, this is the same team that beat Real Madrid over the weekend 6-1 in Madrids own backyard.

Lasting 190 odd minutes of football and frankly, despite their posession, looked reasonably comfortable last night. It wasn’t the referee who knocked us out but Chelsea’s inability to take their chances and inclination to defend too deep which ultimately cost them. 1-0 is seldom enough, especially if you’re playing a team of Barcelona’s calibre.

Lets not let the Didier Drogba rant and swearing into the camera at the end mask 2 great strikes during the match, first Michael Essien’s 20-yard blockbuster in the ninth minute with some great defending for 90 minutes.

Andres Iniesta’s spectacular strike in his Nike Total 90 Laser Football boots deep into stoppage time wrecked Chelsea’s dreams of a second successive Champions League final against Manchester United.
