Rafa Benitez Contract Extension Good or Bad?

Liverpool Football Club boss Rafa Benitez has ended speculation about his future by signing a new five-year contract.

With Rafa Benitez’s Current deal due to expire at the end of the season and talks over an extension Not looking like they were leading too much, it only seemed that the lure of returning back to Spain to Manage Real Madrid was in the offering.

The Spaniard had turned down numerous offers from the club, but he has now agreed terms and put pen-to-paper, handing some of the club’s fans a huge boost.

Benitez admitted he was ‘delighted’ to have committed his future to the Merseyside giants having been at Anfield for 5 Years

My heart is with Liverpool football club, so I’m delighted to sign this new deal,” said Benitez.

On a footballing front it is always good to see that a club sticks by his manager, but if you take out the Uefa Champions League Cup win in 2005 I don’t think that Rafa would be at Liverpool Football Club today.

There is no doubting that in Europe and one off knock out competitions he does have a good pedigree,But NOT in the Barclays Premiership, as he has shown this year.

Great timing on signing the deal, just after beating Middlesboro, Real Madrid & Manchester United within a week.

What would the reaction have been if he signed 2 weeks ago when Liverpool had continued to drop silly points since the New Year, getting knocked out of the FA Cup to local rivals Everton all this after selling Robbie Keane to Tottenham Hotspur with no replacement brought in to bolster the squad?

I personally don’t rate Rafa Benitez as a manager that can bring the Premiership trophy to Anfield, his team selection is mind boggling and for all his good buys in the transfer market there are a lot more bad buys.

For Liverpool to be the team they once were in the 80’s they need to get more home grown talent in the ranks like Steven Gerrard & Jamie Carragher, Not the players that Rafa buys in then plays them out of position.

He is a manager that seems to buy in quantity and not quality.
